Google Knol: Some random ideas

(need to run but wanted to share some ideas on knol, will edit spelling stuff tomorrow or tonite ;) - OG)

Re: Official Google Blog: Encouraging people to contribute knowledge

If people talked about Wikipedia they often were frustrated in the case that they were also contributors. This was both true for the English and the German version of Wikipedia.

Google's Knol seems to pla to offer a space for knowledgable editors without other people being able to edit the articles directly.

Wisdom of crowds will still pay a role, as atricles will be ablte to be rated, commented, edits can be ofefred and all Knol pages will be submitted to the pagerank mechanism of Google (maybe they should even feed that back in the context of the article.)

I have for years been thinking about 'letting all contributors earn' and habve set up the one or the other mechanism in my own projects. Google Knol wants to let contributors not only be credited bit also earn, and they will not exclude the pages from other search engine's indexes.so even if Google goes down (a pet idea of mine) Knol might survive ;)

If Knol can be abused to set up a linkfarm ... will be seen.

OK, Knowl does sound like marrying wikipedia to squidoo.com. Squidoo also has the scheme of letting you earn from Google ads on their pages. Maybe Google should haveopened te gambit by buying Squidoo. (Or has Yahoo already? I keep losing track ;) ) well, maybe this will put squidoo up for sale ;)

Google has often not been the first mover but leveraged ist otential of eyballs to get a project moving.
Wikipedia is not all bad and will not go away. But maybe Knol will draw the more knowledgable and frustrated contributors from Wikipedia, which micht not be a bad thing for everyone.

And finally: As Knol-articles have authors they should be quotable in academic papers, right? ;)

  1. The fact is that more and more Google searches turn up Wikipedia sources as one of the top hits. So Google is sending people over to the competition. And people will start to ask: "why not just start every search at Wikipedia?"
    Google doesn't like that.

    It's all about money.

  2. Which is why they have put up Knol ;)

OTOH Google needs ppl putting up good info.
Cause they don't ((obviously:) want to) provide the info themselves. (Even not w/ Knol...)

  3. With the introduction of Google Knol just now Squidoo will probably be forced to pay 100% of advertising revenue to its authors as oondi (http://www.oondi.com) is already doing.
